I have often heard people say that whether you are married, divorced, single, or cohabitating has no effect on children - they are resilient and will all turn out the same. Some say there even may be benefits of growing up in a home in which the parents aren't the traditional married unit. But what do the facts say? Lets start with something basic like academics. For sake of simplicity, I will call children in married parent homes "MPs." Children living in a home with a never married mother are 4 times as likely as MPs to be expelled from school. children from divorced families are twice as likely to be expelled as MPs. I don't know about you, but I would like my children to stay in school. Reason #1 to be married. Let's look at children's GPAs(grade point average). The average GPA of MPs is a 2.9, while children living in the homes of never-married parents average lower at a 2.5 GPA. So between GPA and school expulsion rates we can see that living with married parents has a positive effect on children academically. Reason #2 to be married. We'll take it up a notch. What about the effects of various kinds of parental units of jail time? According to data gathered from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, children raised in married parent homes are the least likely to be incarcerated. The next bar (children raised by a mother only) shows children are twice as likely to be incarcerated as MPs. The rates only increase from there. Reason #3 to be married. Here's where things really start to escalate. Children living with their biological married parents are the least likely to be abused. The numbers on this graph speak for themselves. Want to protect your children? Reason #4 to be married. Seriously scary number time. Even more than just serious abuse, this is fatal abuse. And look who still has the lowest rates. These stats are truly chilling. Remember the last question I asked: Want to protect your children? How about this: Do you want your children to live? Reason #5 to be married. Children living in MPs are the least likely to run away from home. Reason #6 to be married. Are you in need of more reasons? How about money - the all holy dollar. A family that is on their first marriage has only a 12% rate of living in poverty. Families where parents have never married ... 67%! You do the math. Reason #7 to be married. How about this one - families with married parents make more money per year than any other unit! Reason #8 to be married. The likelihood of enduring spouse abuse is also significantly lower for married couples. This isn't just about safety for your child; its about safety for you! Reason #9 to be married. Reason #10 to be married? You tell me! For more information on these statistics and other aspects of marriage and families, check out these videos:
