“You were not created to be the same as men. Your natural attributes, affections, and personalities are entirely different from those of a man. They consist of faithfulness, benevolence, kindness, and charity. They give you the personality of a woman. They also balance the more aggressive and competitive nature of a man. The business world is competitive and sometimes ruthless. We do not doubt that women have both the brainpower and skills – and in some instances superior abilities – to compete with men. But by competing they must, of necessity, become aggressive and competitive. Thus their godly attributes are diminished and they acquire a quality of sameness with man. The conventional wisdom of the day would have you be equal with men. We say, we would not have you descend to that level. More often than not the demand for equality means the destruction of the inspired arrangement that God has decreed for man, woman, and the family. Equality should not be confused with equivalence.”
~President Ezra Taft Benson

“So what are you majoring in?” “Child Development and Professional Preschool Education.” “That’s neat. So are you going to teach preschool?” “No. I want to be a mom.” “Ohh…” That’s a pretty typical conversation for me. And it drives me nuts! YES. I want to be a mom. What’s the problem with that? Everyone expects us to have this life-changing career that will make the biggest difference known to mankind. Well guess what? In no place can you make a greater difference that within your own home. If I have 4 kids and each of them has 4 kids and so on, after 10 generations I will have influenced about 1.5 million people. Top that. President David O. McKay said “No other success can compensate for failure in the home.” Choosing to be a mom doesn’t mean I have low aspirations or am taking the easy way out – for heaven’s sake, I take trig classes for fun! What it really comes down to is how I treasure God’s plan and desire to raise His children in the best way possible. To help them become strong, intelligent, righteous people. Choosing to be a mom isn’t copping out. It’s stepping up. “Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels. To you mothers [...] we say God bless and protect you, and give you the strength and courage, the faith and knowledge, the holy love and consecration to duty, that shall enable you to fill to the fullest measure the sacred calling which is yours.” (“Message of the First Presidency” at General Conference, Saturday, October 3, 1942.)
