Homosexuality is a hot topic in our society lately. Is it okay? Is it wrong? Does it matter? How do people even become gay? Aren’t people just born that way? These are all questions I’ve heard and I’m sure others have heard as well.
I’ve come across some interesting research lately that shed some light on the subject. There is actually no conclusive evidence that homosexual tendencies are generated by biological factors. A study was done with identical twins with the understanding that if one twin becomes or is gay, then the other twin will also because they have the same genes. When the results came in, the amount of twins who were both gay was far too small to prove that biology plays a leading role.
So what does influence homosexual tendencies? What it almost always comes down to is the way people interacted as children. When a child was rejected or bullied by peers, he or she lost that connection that most humans gain with their same gender in their early years. You remember that time when the opposite sex had cooties and we all stuck with our own gender. Well the bullied children never get that bond. That just makes my heart hurt. No one should be shunned like that. These children spend much time and thought in trying to gain the attention and friendship of their own gender. They merely have a desire to be intimate or close with their own gender. This preoccupation often leads them to start thinking that perhaps they are gay. And if they are gay, it might explain why they were bullied and never seemed to fit in.
Having learned about this, I have so much more love for people who struggle with homosexual feelings and tendencies. No one should be rejected. If we reached out with love towards everyone, can you image what a difference we could make? If we could teach our children to love and include others, can you see how much heartbreak this would save?
